No business goes on without facing difficulties or having ups and downs especially a new business that has just been put into works. When an individual comes up with a brilliant idea that can serve as a solution to a problem or as something that will bring a change to the market, he/she faces a couple of big challenges that might decide if the idea works out or not, that depending on how those challenges are faced and conquered. And in doing so, the way an entrepreneur handles the situation, sticks to their passion, stay dedicated and the level of hard work invested will matter at the end of the day.

Most successful businesses today didn’t just come from established individuals who just picked money from their purses and inject into their businesses. Some of them had to take loans to help start up. One of the major issues in entrepreneurship is with capital. Sometimes, new ideas need large amount of capital and in order to carry out their strategies properly, they need to take a loan or seek for grants, which is not always easy especially for new businesses. Asides capital, lack of experience or education also proved to block the way for entrepreneurs.

Ultimately, there are no shortcuts in business or entrepreneurship. That might mean a lot of hard work and dedication which in truth is not easy but that’s the reality as nothing comes easy. Certain individuals started their journey into the path of entrepreneurship with several barriers in the way but they stand today with huge accomplishments to their names. Their stories serve as inspiration to future entrepreneurs who might find it difficult in their journey to success. I’ve made a list of a couple of successful entrepreneurs in the world today and how they started their journey and how they became who they are today. This man right here has to be one of the most successful entrepreneurs in history. He has had the longest spell on top of the “richest man in the world” list. Gates had been the world’s wealthiest individual for more than 16 years now. He is the co-founder of Microsoft and is one of the popular names when you’re talking about the revolution of personal computers in the world today.

At a young age, Bill Gates liked computer programming and he spent most of his free time creating and writing several programs on the teletype terminal computer his school had donated. He went on to invest in his passion and started the Microsoft Company and also developed the Windows Operating system which is widely used in most personal computers today.

Bill Gates is also a philanthropist who invests his money into reducing poverty, promoting health care, improving education and providing technological access in many countries today. All these are investments in which Gates will definitely reap rewards. They are also risks as some of his strategies might not go through but as an entrepreneur, taking risk is part of the process taken to ensure and enjoy entrepreneurial success.   


You really can’t make a list of successful entrepreneurs in history and not make space for co-founder of Apple, Steve Jobs. His company, Apple, is one of the most popular gadgets companies in the world and is known for even having its own Operating System which is called iOS. Steve Jobs dropped out of school at a young age when his family could no longer fund his education due to financial constraints. He went on to attend some classes unofficially and was basically living off free meals that were distributed at a local Hare Krishna Temple.

He also did a couple of menial jobs including returning Coke bottles for some change. While he was doing all these, he attended Calligraphy classes which eventually inspired him to design the Mac’s revolutionary typefaces and also the font design. Together with his friend, Steve Wozniak, Jobs went on to start Apple Inc and devolved several gadgets. Steve Jobs achieved all this despite not having proper education or experience in the field he eventually ventured in. His net worth as at the time of his death was over $8.3 billion, showing how successful he became even after his experiences as a child.


As a child, Walt Disney drew cartoon pictures of his neighbour’s horses just for fun. He lived on a farm together with his family and when he was older, he applied for several newspaper cartoonist jobs but he was unable to secure any job. He eventually got a job at an art studio where he designed ads for newspapers and magazines. He also worked on commercials and later developed interest in animation. His first creation was for Oswald the Lucky Rabbit which was owned by Universal Pictures due to his running contract with them at the time.

He walked out of his contract and started his own animation company. From there, he started the popular cartoon, Mickey Mouse which was widely accepted around the world. The success of Mickey Mouse ultimately made Walt Disney very popular and hence, a very successful businessman. He is one of the most popular entrepreneurs in history.


This woman right here is one of the most influential women in the world today. Her story is one of the amazing success stories for an entrepreneur. Her mother was an unmarried teen who worked as a housemaid. Her family was so poor that she wore dresses made out of potato sacks to school, which got her teased a lot.  She also suffered sexual abuse from family members and it was something she has discussed on her TV Show.

When she was older, she took up a gig at a local radio station and she impressed many station managers who like her dedication and passion for her work. Oprah worked her way up to bigger radio stations before starting her own TV show titled The Oprah Winfrey Show. Her story is such an inspiration to many as her rough upbringing made her success even more impressive and incredible.


The story of Aliko Dangote’s success story about how he borrowed money from an uncle to start a business is one that is really popular in the country. He liked the idea of starting a business from a young age. He borrowed 500,000 from an uncle to follow his passion and start to import and sell agricultural commodities in his country. His company, Dangote Groups is one of the biggest companies in the country and Africa at large, with a variety of products which also includes cement. He has been the richest man in the country and also in Africa for more than nine years now.

His primary business venture is the cement company, Dangote Cement, though he also sells other products like sugar, flour and salt. He also has business interests in Oil and Gas. His story is quite impressive especially for a business he started with 500,000 naira. He now has an estimated net worth of about $8.1 billion.

From the stories of all these entrepreneurs, it is important to note how well they focused on their passion and tried their best to work strategies to help them achieve their goals. There is need for entrepreneurs to always invest in themselves to improve their experience, education or skills. Self investment is highly important as it equip entrepreneurs with necessary skills to build their businesses and also be able to sustain it. Capital is also a general problem mostly and taking loans should be an option. Staying dedicated and putting in loads of hard work is a fundamental part of  achieving success.
