September 8, 2021by ServoNG0

There are a lot of business options in Nigeria today and it is now up to entrepreneurs to decide whichever one they want and can adequately handle without any issues at all. There are also business options that don’t even require much and you can just simply operate from the comfort of your home and without stress. Options to have a physical stores are also available and entrepreneurs looking to start the business can decide on the one they want. One of the numerous ideas for business in Nigeria is Barbing. It is not a new business at all as it has been around for a very long time now. It is pretty lucrative as it is one of the essentials for individuals to look good when they’re going out. The cost of starting is also pretty reasonable and that makes it a very good option for entrepreneurs.

Barbing is a skill that involves cutting, trimming, shaving and carving or shaping a client’s hair. Even though the cutting, trimming and others can be considered as the main points of the business, there are other services that can be gotten from the business like dying and washing of the hair. The business is a really popular business and is something that has been a very good source of income for individuals practicing the business. It is lucrative and can go on to bring in high amounts of income depending on the services rendered as well as the location of the barbing salon.

The business can be started either by getting a location where customers can come in or as a mobile salon or barber. The location based business is pretty common in Nigeria and is widely practiced. It involves getting a place where clients or customers can come in to get their hair cut done at a price. Everything pertaining to the business is simply done in the shop gotten by the barber. The barber can then decide if they’ll be getting extra help to go about the business very well depending on the number of customers coming in regularly. The mobile option is not really common in Nigeria and it can be in two ways. One is to set up an online space for the business and having customers request for a hair cut online. It is similar to what is called Home service. This way you don’t need a shop as you’ll be going to the customer’s preferred location, most likely the house, for a cut. The other option involves getting a bus that is fully equipped with barbing equipments and using it to go about places and for this one customers get into the bus to have their hair cut.

One of the reasons why the business is such a good business option is due to the high number of people who patronize the business. Barbers always have their shops filled mostly on weekends when individuals will need to prepare for another week’s work or even going to school or just to have a nice cut and look nice. It is also something for both males and females. There was once a time when only males cut their hair at a barber’s shop but now, females also get haircut which also increases the customer base for the business. A high demand like the one this business has is one that means you’ll definitely not have issues getting customers as long as you’re not close to competitors and thus translates to high amount of income therefore making it a good business option.

Starting the business is not something really hard to do. Barbing, like I’ve mentioned, is a skill and individuals might need to learn the skill to be able to go about the business. You can simply enroll at a barber’s shop to learn and as a plus, you can also learn a few things online through the internet and platforms like YouTube. The business is one that can be started by anyone as long as they’re well equipped with the capabilities to run the business, of which one of it is knowing how to barb. You don’t need an educational qualification or experience to be able to run the business. It’s not a difficult business to start and capital pretty much depends on the kind of business you want to start. Despite this, the cost is still reasonable and you might only need a high capital if you’ll be getting a bus for the mobile barbing salon business.

In the next sub heads, I’ll be discussing the steps involved in starting a barbing salon business in Nigeria and some of the things that might prove useful during the course of the business to ensure that you’re doing the right thing, making good amount of income and also being successful at the business.

1. RESEARCH

No matter what you’ve heard someone saying about a business and how well success is assured or how lucrative it would turn out, always try to do your own research. The research will not cost anything except your time and that time will prove to be well spent when the business starts and the successes starts coming in. It is important to do a thorough investigation about the business since you’re going to be investing your money into it and you’ve never been involved in the business. Some hours of research won’t hurt.

The research is always meant to give you an idea of what to expect and the challenges ahead to be faced. It teaches future entrepreneur how the business works and what success means. It shows the risks involved and the ways to tackle them. It also gives ideas on how to sustain the business and work towards more success. Imagine missing out on any of the mentioned points, it’s more like being less equipped about something especially something you plan to spend money on.

There are experts in the business, of course, so also look to advise from these individuals as they are most likely the best bet for reliable information on the business. Take note of even the smallest things during the research period and pay close attention to how to stay and survive in the business. The research is as important as anything in the business.

2. WRITE A BUSINESS PLAN

A business plan needs no introduction. It is equally as important as some of the other processes or things involved in the business. After a comprehensive and thorough research has been conducted, entrepreneurs must now put all their ideas into paper after, of course, deciding to start the business. The business plan will cover things like the way you plan to operate, the cost of several things, how you plan to market your business, future projections and also contingency plans.

The business plan serves a number of purposes. In cases where individuals might need to get investors or even get a loan, it will prove useful as it will contain all that needs to be known concerning the business. It is also going to serve as a point of reference for the proposed business.

3. CAPITAL AND LOCATION

The need for capital in starting a business cannot be overemphasized. The capital needed for this business is usually not on the high side though it still depends on the capacity you intend to start with. You can either decide to start a location based business or work with the other options in the business like home service or the mobile salon. If you won’t be getting a location, the cost of getting the materials will be the main thing the capital will be used for.

4. GETTING THE EQUIPMENTS/MATERIALS FOR THE BUSINESS

At this point, the capital will be put into use to get the materials needed for the business. The barbing clipper is perhaps the most important thing in this business and they come in electric and rechargeable. The two can be gotten depending on the capital available. Chairs, fan, combs, hair brushes and a generator set, due to the inconsistent power supply in the country, are things that should be gotten too. If you’ll be using a bus for the mobile salon, this will be the time to get it and also equip the bus with neccesary materials for the business.

5. MARKETING AND GETTING STARTED

At this point, the business is ready to be started. Marketing can either be through social media or with banners or posters. Word of mouth and referrals also play a major role in getting customers.
