HOW TO START LIQUID SOAP BUSINESS IN NIGERIA

There was definitely a time when making or producing a soap was not an option. It was either the chemicals were too expensive or they were not in the country and of course, people were made to believe that cost of making the liquid soap was highly expensive and it was something to be produced in an industry. Today the case is different and individuals can now make soaps from literally anywhere just as long as the materials are made available. The best thing about it is that it can be produced right in the home with little or even no stress at all. Liquid Soap making has become very popular today and people are always willing to learn the processes involved in making them.

Simply put, the Liquid Soap, just like the name implies, is the mixture of chemicals with water to form soap. Like I’ve mentioned earlier, it is an activity that can be conducted right from your house without hassle. After production, the soap can be used for several things. Washing clothes, doing dishes, washing the hand and more are some of the things that the soap can be used for. One interesting thing is also that the regular washing machine are now built to accept liquid soap for the washing of clothes. In Nigeria, it is almost difficult to find a home without liquid soap. It is almost like a very important household item.

Making the liquid soap is however not difficult. It has almost no stress and even more interesting is that the soap making process can be completed in manner of few minutes, say 30 minutes at least. The process is totally easy and the chemicals are not concentrated chemicals that can have serious effects on the body though it is thoroughly advised for soap makers to always use protective gear like gloves for the hand and the nose masks to cover the nose from the smell of the chemicals.

Using the protective gear is of course one of the steps involved in the soap making process. There are a number of other steps which can be considered when making liquid soap. In the next sub heads I’ll be discussing the steps involved in starting up a liquid soap business in Nigeria and some factors to consider before thinking of starting or even while you’re already in business.

1. DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH

No matter what you’ve heard someone saying about a business and how well success is assured or how lucrative it would turn out, always try to do your own research. The research will not cost anything except your time and that time will prove to be well spent when the business starts and the successes starts coming in. It is important to do a thorough investigation about the business since you’re going to be investing your money into it and you’ve never been involved in the business. Some hours of research won’t hurt.

The research is always meant to give you an idea of what to expect and the challenges ahead to be faced. It teaches future entrepreneur how the business works and what success means. It shows the risks involved and the ways to tackle them. It also gives ideas on how to sustain the business and work towards more success. Imagine missing out on any of the mentioned points, it’s more like being less equipped about something especially something you plan to spend money on.

For this particular kind of business, the internet will be totally helpful in learning about liquid soap making and the processes involved. Video platform, YouTube, is available to get videos on step by step procedures on how to mix the chemicals, the recommended chemicals to get, how to know when the soap is ready and direct viewing on how all the processes eventually arrives at the final finished liquid soap ready for sale. There are a lot of videos to be found there and you can watch as many as you want for clarity and to be sure.

There are experts in the business, of course, so also look to advise from these individuals as they are most likely the best bet for reliable information on the business. Take note of even the smallest things during the research period and pay close attention to how to stay and survive in the business. The research is as important as anything in the business.

2. GET THE SUPPLIES

This steps depends on the capacity you plan to produce. It could either be in large quantity or in small quantity. Whichever way, the most important materials needed for the production of liquid soap is a big container which can be used for mixing, a stirring stick, and the bottles for retail purposes. These materials can be easily gotten in the regular market and in cases where you’re doing it at home, there’s a big chance you might just have all these materials. If so, then there’s no need to get them again. That’s one of the plus sides of the business. The materials required are regular materials you find at home and you might not buy them.

After that, then the chemicals needs to be gotten. Just as I mentioned earlier, the different chemicals are mixed with addition of water to get the soap. There are a number of important chemicals that are used. They have names and can be gotten in the market. In some cases, the chemicals are labelled in places where they are to be bought. They are labelled in numbers to show the steps each chemical can go into the water. If you’re producing in large scale, you might need to recognize the chemicals. Some of the known chemicals used are caustic soda, Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, Antisol and Nitrosol, Sodium Carbonate, SodiumTripolyphosphate, colorant to add colours and the fragrance to give it a nice smell. All these chemicals are measured and added based on scale of business. They can be easily gotten in markets and they go for cheap prices.

3. REGISTERING THE BUSINESS

At this point, you’ve already decided to start the business or you’ve probably completed the production process and registering comes next. It is almost as important as anything you plan to do for the start of the business. Failure to get registered could potentially render all your hardwork useless. Get informed about the regulatory authorities responsible for the registration process and get it done.

During your research, you probably must have encountered a couple of agencies responsible for it so it should not be a problem finding them. Also, don’t deal with agents or seek the help of any individual to help you do it, get it done yourself to prevent issues where the agents fail to register you or the individual is even a “scammer”.

Also, you can seek the help of some trustworthy agencies that deal in business registration to help you get your business registered. They are reliable and will give you a good chance of getting registered without stress.

4. BRANDING AND MARKETING YOUR PRODUCT

After registration, next is to sell the product. There are two ways you might choose to brand your product. One is by using similar bottles and attaching a small business card on it. The business card-like design will have the logo or name of the business and the contact details of the producer. The other method is to use no branding at all. Yes, it means just transferring the soap into bottles and selling them without anything attached to it or even using similar bottles. This method is very common especially for many small scale business owners.

The first branding method is also one way to market your soap. Your contact information is already available there so customers can always call and also advertise to their friends. Another method is visiting markets and taking your product samples to market men and women. On rare cases, social media is also used.

The easy nature of the soap making process makes it an easy business to get involved in and therefore means high competition. At this point, individuals will need to come up with ways to stand out in the market. The business will prove to be highly lucrative provided the steps are followed, the soap is of good quality and you develop strategies to beat competition.
